They were in the front line trenches during WW1 and, afterwards, at the forefront of modern medicine... then they volunteered again in WW2. I could not foresee the magnitude of the task ahead of me in collating so much data. However, the rewards have been many. Each doctor's story is unique. I have really enjoyed learning about them and also meeting their children and grandchildren. Reference books have an important place. However, my book on Kitchener's 100 will be different as it explores each doctor's background and how they survived the war.
Oswald Barton was the son of Australia's first Prime Minister.
Paddy Moran married an American actress.
Ray Ryan joined the Royal Air Force and was the 1st Director of the Royal Canadian Air Force Medical Service.
Cecil McAdam cared for returned soldiers and young sportsmen.
Another interesting facet is what they did with the knowledge they acquired during the war. Sir Norman McAlister Gregg MC discovered the link between Rubella and infant blindness. Several doctors served in mental institutions, no doubt helping soldiers stricken with shell shock. There were many doctors from around the world who volunteered to help their fellow soldiers. This snapshot of 100 Australian, British and New Zealand doctors exemplifies the commitment and courage made by all.
